وزن شعر انگلیسی

                                          

وزن در شعر انگلیسی را با دو سنجه ارزیابی می کنند:

نخست ترتیب فشار (stress) در هر پایه است. پایه یا foot کوتاه ترین واحد وزنی در شعر انگلیسی است. برای مثال واژه ugly یک پایه با دو هجا است و ترتیب فشار روی آن بصورت (- +) است. واژه perform هم یک پایه با دو هجا و ترتیب فشاریِ برعکس (+ -) است. قالب های پایه ای در شعر انگلیسی بدین ترتیب است:

1. Iambic (+ -): هجای نخست بی فشار، هجای دوم با فشار before, within, divine, the bus, a book

مثال در شعر انگلیسی:

That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang

2. Trochaic (- +): هجای نخست بافشار، هجای دوم بی فشار penthouse, boredom, childhood, careful

. Spondaic (+ +): همه هجاها با فشار

مثال در شعر انگلیسی:

4. Anapestic (+ – -): دوهجا بی فشار و هجای سوم بافشار

مثال در شعر انگلیسی:

And the sound of a voice that is still

5. Dactylic (- + +): دوهجا بافشار و هجای سوم بی فشار

مثال در شعر انگلیسی:

This is the forest primeval, the murmuring pines and the hemlock

سنجه دوم «تعداد پایه ها در هر سطر» است:

یک پایه در سطر: monometer

دو پایه در سطر: diameter

سه پایه در سطر: trimester

چهار پایه در سطر: tetrameter

پنج پایه در سطر: pentameter

شش پایه در سطر: hexameter

هفت پایه در سطر: heptameter

هشت پایه در سطر: octameter

با این آگاهی، به شیوه ی نامگذاری وزن شعر در انگلیس توجه کنید:

That time | of year | thou mayst | in me | behold
