There are a number of interesting observations that can be made about numbers, as spelled out in English. Here are a few:

 

Miscellaneous Facts

Eight is the first number alphabetically. Zero is the last.

Four is the only number that, spelled out, has as many letters.

Fifty and seventy are the only numbers divisible by ten that, when spelled out, have as many letters as ten divides into them. Therefore, fifty-four and seventy-four are equal to the numbers you get when you count the letters digit by digit. Thirty-six and forty-five have this same property in reverse, that is, the first word has the same number of letters as the second digit, and vice versa.

Forty is the only number whose letters are in alphabetical order. One is the only number whose letters are in reverse alphabetical order. First also has its letters in alphabetical order.

Eighty-eight, eleven letters long, is the longest number that is normally typed using strictly alternating hands (ignoring the hyphen).

Interchangeability is the word in the English language that contains the letters to form the most numbers. Its letters can form the words three, eight, nine, ten, thirteen, thirty, thirty-nine, eighty, eighty-nine, ninety, and ninety-eight.

Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice In Wonderland, once noted that "eleven plus two" and "twelve plus one" use the same letters and produce the same sum.

A learning disability in reading comprehension affects the learner's ability to understand the meaning of words and passages. Students with learning disability in reading comprehension may also struggle with basic reading skills such as decoding words, but comprehension is the greater weakness. Some students with a learning disability in reading comprehension can read aloud with little or no difficulty pronouncing words, but they do not understand or remember what they've read. Reading aloud, their words and phrases are often read with no feeling, no change in tone, no logical phrasing, and no rhythm or pace

با طبقه‌بندی کردن لغات، بخاطر سپردن آنها راحت‌تر می‌شود. به مثال زیر توجه کنید:

و سخن آخر اینکه هیچ کدام از روشهای فراگیری لغات کامل نیستند و هر کدام نقاط ضعف و قوت خاص خود را دارند. بهترین راه این است که این روشها را با هم تلفیق کنید.

Why should adults seek to improve their vocabulary? It’s a fair enough question. You’ve been through the education system, you’ve been taught all the words you thought you needed to know to take you through into adult life, so why should you need to know any more?

You can probably answer that yourself. You are in a rotten job, or just feel generally held back by your limited word base, and you know that having a better command of the English language would make a huge difference to your life. Building vocabulary adults is more important than you might at first think. 

Knowing more words can have a significant impact in many ways. When you begin to use new words in your everyday speech you will find people will start to pay attention to you, and begin to follow your lead. Your career will suddenly be given an immediate boost when your boss realizes you are more competent than your peers. You will start create good impressions with your emails, and letters. If you are a student, you will find you are soon reaching the top of the class with your new writing skills.

تکرار، تکرار و تکرار!

مطالعات نشان می‌دهند که احتمال فراگیری لغاتی که بیش از 8 بار به هنگام مطالعه متنهای مختلف دیده می‌شوند، بسیار بیشتر از لغاتی است که کمتر تکرار شده‌اند. همچنین زبان‌شناسان به اتفاق معتقدند که تکرار لغات با صدای بلند به از بر کردن آنها کمک زیادی می‌کند. بنابراین گاهی همین تکرار کردن ساده حافظه شما را برای بخاطر سپردن لغات دشوار یاری می‌کند. در ضمن توصیه می‌شود که جمله کاملی را که لغت مورد نظر را در خود دارد، از بر کنید و یا چند بار با صدای بلند تکرار نمایید.

تصویر سازی ذهنی

در این روش شما یک لغت انگلیسی را با یک لغت فارسی که تلفظ یا املای مشابهی دارد، به نحوی مرتبط می کنید که الزاماً از لحاظ معنایی با هم ارتباطی ندارند. بعنوان مثال اگر شما برای اولین بار به لغت tongue (تانگ: به معنی زبان) برخوردید، متوجه می‌شوید که تلفظ آن شبیه تانک در فارسی است. بنابراین می‌توانید در ذهنتان مجسم کنید که بجای زبان، یک تانک از دهان کسی در حال خارج شدن است!

مثال دوم: فرض کنید شما به لغت در valorous به معنی شجاع بر می‌خورید. در این حال می‌توانید در ذهن خود چنین مجسم کنید که در کنار دریا ایستاده‌اید و مشغول تماشای وال‌ها هستید. والها یکی یکی به سطح آب می‌آیند ولی به محض اینکه شما را می‌بینند می‌ترسند و فرار می‌کنند، تا اینکه یک وال روس (یک وال از کشور روسیه) به سطح آب می‌آید و بجای اینکه از شما فرار کند، به سمت شما می‌آید. شما با خود می‌گویید: وال روس، شجاع است!

 

این تکنیک به شما کمک می‌کند تا هر چه بهتر معانی لغات را بخاطر بسپارید. همچنین گفته می‌شود که هر‌چقدر تصویر ساخته شده عجیب‌تر باشد، به خاطر آوردن آن هم آسانتر خواهد بود.
